Unilever, Nestlé, and PepsiCo were questioned. These international food manufacturing corporations are allegedly selling subpar goods in low-income nations like India, according to a Business Standard study.

A non-profit group called the Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNI) has expressed dissatisfaction over the poor ratings that these multinational corporations' goods obtain in Australia and New Zealand's "health rating system" in a worldwide index.

Food items that receive a score of 3.5 or above are considered healthy under this specific grading system. However, the average score for goods marketed in wealthy nations is 2.3 out of 5. At 1.8, it's considerably worse for low-income nations.

The organization assesses food goods marketed in over 30 nations, according to Business Standard. For the first time, the index divides the evaluation between low- and high-income nations.

Mark Wiesen, head of research at ATNI, urged governments in low-income nations to enforce food safety regulations more strictly. "It is very clear that what these companies are selling in the poorest countries in the world, where they are most active, is not a healthy product at all," he stated.

Over 70% of the 1 billion obese individuals reside in low- and middle-income nations, according to the World Health Organization. Consuming these soft drinks and other liquids in excess raises the chance of developing diabetes and obesity.

Over the past few decades, obesity has also become more common in India. In India, over 24% of men and 24% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 are overweight or obese, according to the National Family Health Survey.

In metropolitan regions, the issue is also becoming more prevalent among kids and teenagers. In metropolitan regions, 5–8% of children suffer from obesity.

To combat obesity, the central government has launched a number of measures. They include the 'Eat Right India' campaign and the 'Fit India Movement'. The campaign's objectives are to lower the risk of obesity and encourage healthy living.
